Romulo Royo

Goddesses of Nibiru

Miguel Marcos Gallery is pleased to present Goddesses of Nibiru, the first solo exhibition of Rómulo Royo (Zaragoza, 1976) in Barcelona. Royo’s work reflects the relation between the myth and the reality, inviting us to a fantastic world of science fiction.

Applied to the world of painting, the delicacy and strength represented by the female figure brings us closer to the fantasy of current theme, Royo sets up the premise with a figurative language marked by a primitive composition, simultaneously dealt with strength in his brushstrokes and delicacy in veiled colours that enhance the power that his figures wield.

Rómulo Royo is attracted by the universes that transport us to other worlds and timeless spaces, getting out of everyday reality and immersing into the most enigmatic places that have always been accompanied by mankind. In these worlds we cannot find answers but there the feelings and emotions spring out without endless. In fact, when asked why he dedicates to this kind of painting, he said that from very early moments he was attracted to get further away from the surrounding reality and venture into places closer to the chimera. All of this could be dated to his childhood, when he has influenced by some authors as Jodorowsky, who wrote the Incal along with drawings of Moebius, a story of science fiction thirty years ahead of our time discussing the current structure of society and the problems of today.

The series Goddesses of Nibiru invites us to fantastic world, in which we find beautiful warriors of fine features, ready to fight against demons and gods. The costumes and ornaments, which she wears are timeless objects that reminds us of ancient civilizations, such as feathers, strange hats, dresses with metal pieces as contraposition to futuristic elements, and in some cases, light coming out of the neck releasing fantasy and vitality. Royo says “the neck is the communication between the inside with the outside, the union of the spirit and the material body. I wanted to represent in these Goddesses a form of communication through the light from the neck”.

The aesthetics of these goddesses that come from Nibiru planet could be found contextualized in the ancient Mesopotamia and Babylonia. According to some texts of ancient civilizations, Nibiru is a planet in our solar system that orbits our star every 3600 years. Nibiru is the home of gods, concretely Annunaki, known as winged beings.

What Rómulo Royo proposes us is a walk through a world of enigmatic goddesses remaining silent in the eye of beholder. A fantastic context that becomes epic in this new pictorial horizon proposed by him.

Rómulo Royo (Zaragoza, 1976) influenced by the world of science fiction decides to start his artistic path to capture a fantasy world. He works with the universe Malefic Time, a multimedia project that participates in several books of international level edited by the company Yamato (USA).
