Jochen Lempert

Zostera & Posidonia

Since his first exhibition at ProjecteSD in 2003, Jochen Lempert presentations evidence both the simplicity and complexity of the artist’s exceptional vision of the natural world and the generosity with which he shares it. Lempert continues with the exploration of  the  properties and  materiality  of  the photographic image. His silver-gelatin prints activate a material presence that gives them an object‐like  sensuousness  and  an unbeatable immediacy.

For his sixth exhibition at the gallery Lempert has selected a new constellation of works that relate to the marine environment. The exhibition title, Zostera & Posidonia, specifically refers to two different kinds of aquatic plants, commonly known as seagrass. Rather than being the subject of the exhibition, they are the point of departure and some of the highlights in the show.

The artist’s deep knowledge of natural science, his sensitivity and his acute eye, together with his awareness for art and culture intersect so naturally and organically that it is impossible to restrict the contents of the exhibition to one idea. Some of the pictures in the show seem to be portraying the ephemeral and the immaterial while others capture the most banal and fleeting moments or focus on the most unnoticeable details. His pictures grant access to our immediate surroundings as both as aesthetic realms and as sites for scientific insight. Poetic, uncanny, conceptual, abstract or figurative, Lempert’s work is the result of long reflection and process but most importantly the consequence of his ability to operate as an artist with full freedom and a relentless capacity to experiment, learn and create with no concession to trends.

“Thinking is more interesting than knowing, but less interesting than looking” Goethe said. For those still “looking” Lempert’s photographs are a generous reward.
