HANS & FRITZ CONTEMPORARY

Camila Cañeque

Máquina total

HANS & FRITZ CONTEMPORARY is pleased to present the exhibition MÁQUINA TOTAL by the artist CAMILA CAÑEQUE. As though a hangover caused by the accumulation of layers over the centuries had generated a restless but totally paralyzed environment, the installation presents an obstinate pause from which to question the direction of our accelerating machinery.

On this occasion, the presence of a static body—the main feature of the artist’s performance work—is superseded by objects whose common denominator is also immobility. In front of the neurotic flow of images of today, the collection of works that occupy the space are trapped in the waiting room of a hypothetical present, through the figurative use of abstract-visual vocabulary of our consumerist society. An interior puddle, an archaeological excavation or an impracticable mattress are some of the pieces that occupy this circular time—succumbed to stillness.

The repetitive gesture of passivity merges into a monochromatic environment where works battle between materiality and memory. Nature and artificiality cancel each other out, urban elements coexist with claustrophobia and all the pieces are windows with views of an uninhabitable world.

Thus, inactivity is declared a speculative image of resistance and resignation. And so, discarding the action in the future, the narration of a past that was once active is hidden, until a tedious electronic drone announces its flight.
