JAS wants to play on every board. Figuration and abstraction, symbolism and gratuity, traces and spots, draft and signature, incompleteness and exhibition, technique and spontaneity, historical memory and contemporaneity. The paintings of JAS are peopled. The figures, however, are only signs. JAS offers us a genesis being born, a painting more fetal than finished. The palette of colors itself, reduced to two or three tones per canvas, has not yet been totally deployed. The colors do not fill the contours, so that the silhouettes seem to have been emptied of their flesh, forms surviving their being as light survives the stars.
