Mireia Mateo

Recuerdos inventados

Mireia Mateo understands and lives her work with the certain that art and life are inseparable.

Initially she trained herself as a paper restorer and, after having worked for more than fifteen years in parallel with her activity as a painter, her current work  demonstrates her knowledge and sensitivity for the artistic expressiveness. The  plastic universe that emerges from that encounter, like a foggy landscape, is elusive to any possible claim to define it. Her main feature is an expressed desire to be suspended in the limbo that precedes realty and invites the viewer to stay  floating in that indefinite contemplation. As the writer Enrique Vila-Matas already  pointed out about her artworks: “In the works of Mireia Mateo I perceive the new, the unnameable: traces, drifts, tropisms, traces of a wandering firmament…”

The painter begins her training at the Academia de Dibujo y Pintura “Taller de 4 Pintors” of Barcelona. She later graduated in Fine Arts, also in Barcelona. But as  she emphasizes, it was the knowledge of the artwork and the person of Luis Marsans that, for his frequent advices and conversations about painting, was decisive to complete her artistic education.

Her works have been exhibited at the Nahim Isaías Museum of Ecuador, at the Perelada Castle Museum, at the Espai Mallorca of Barcelona, and collectively, at the  Can Framis Museum of the Vila-Casas Foundation, at the Design Museum of Barcelona and at the CosmoCaixa Museum of the same city.

She has exhibited in various galleries in Barcelona, where she has also worked,  together with artists from other disciplines, in the field of installation. She has been  the finalist in various painting and drawing awards, and she acquired a scholarship  from the Ramon Llull Institute. She has made several collaborations as a drawer, as  “Barcelona. Mar viva ”, publication for the Barcelona City Council.

She has recently established links with papermaking masters in Saitama’s Prefecture, Japan, and will hold her next exhibition in Tokyo in November 2019.
