LOOP Barcelona 2015

May 28 - June 6 / XIII edition

LOOP Barcelona is an international gathering to showcase the latest innovations concerning video art, artists' films and practices related to the moving image. This new and exciting edition will take place between the 28th of May and the 6th of June 2015.

Through three clearly defined sections, the Fair, Festival and Studios, LOOP will be presenting an exclusive selection of work from over 45 international galleries selected by an expert committee. These works include videos from artists abroad most of which will be shown for the first time; exhibitions in the main Barcelona venues; specially curated events in selected public spaces, screenings plus a wide range of talks and professional meetings all of them concerned with the main body of LOOP's offerings.

What about collecting video art? & Beyond the Image: Sound will be the two connecting threads of this 13th edition around which the artistic programme is to evolve and the debating and discussion spaces established.

As usual, the LOOP Fair will take place between the 4th and the 6th of June in the Hotel Catalonia Ramblas where a selection of over 45 galleries will take over the hotel rooms in order to show solo videos of contemporary artists many of whom will be exhibiting for the first time. Another first time event is going to be the section devoted to sound works selected by Anne-Laure Chamoissier, an independent curator.

As a novelty LOOP 2015, sponsored by Estrella Damm has launched for the first time the Discovery Award, a project that aims at supporting recent video and film production from international artists through a competition open to the arts community. The 5000 Euro Discovery Award winner will be announced on the 5th of June during a celebration party in the old Barcelona Damm Brewery. In addition, the works of the 10 runner-ups will be exhibited in the same venue in the course of LOOP Barcelona 2015.

What about collecting Video Art? is devoted to exploring video collectionism. The programme will emphasize the figure of the collector as an active agent in the promotion of contemporary art who is engaged in the artistic community and assumes a proactive role within the world of art. Collectionism is going to be the centrepiece of the discussions to take place between the 4th and the 6th of June at the Hotel Catalonia Ramblas as well as being present throughout the exhibitions in the main art venues of the city where relevant international collections such as Sammlung Goetz (Germany), Sam Art Projects (France), the Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo collection (Italy) and the Leal Rios collection (Portugal) will be displayed. In addition, the exhibition Video-Regimen. Coleccionistas en la era audiovisual, LOOP Barcelona 2015 will introduce the most up and coming Spanish video collections. This project, curated by Carles Guerra, is currently being exhibited in the Lázaro Galdiano museum of Madrid until the 11th of May. In Barcelona it will be presented in the Cercle del Liceu, which is to open its doors to the public for the first time for this exhibition. The Catalan National Museum will take part of this project by showing a selection of works from the Sorigué Foundation curated by Javier Panera.

Beyond the Image: Sound will be devoted to exploring those artistic sound practices, which are closely related to moving images. The French specialist Anne-Laure Chamboissier is the curator of a programme about sound events to be performed at the cloister of the old Santa Creu Hospital along with Emmanuel Lagarrigue. Alex Arteaga is to conduct a series of accompanying events at the Mies van der Rohe Pavillion and in the Tàpies Foundation both curated by Lluís Nacenta.

The recently inaugurated Museum of the Cultures of the World as well as several spaces within the old Santa Creu Hospital, among which is the National Library of Catalonia, will also house for the first time several projects and art exhibits from the 28th of May to the 6th of June. Some of the participants are the Filmoteca of Catalonia, the Zumzeig cinema, La Capella, the Boqueria market, La Virreina-Centre de la Imatge, the Real Cercle Artístic, the Picasso Museum, the Ateneu Barcelonès, the Frederic Marès Museum and the Barón de Quadras Palace, a modernist house built by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and currently housing the Institut Ramon Llull.

Arts Santa Mònica is also participating with a work by Jordi Colomer currently under way. Colomer is the first winner of an award for video artists recently created by the Xarxa de Centres i Espais d’Arts Visuals de Catalunya, the Arts Santa Mònica and LOOP Barcelona along with the support of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation.
