Value!
10 debates on the construction of value in the city.
Artistic modernity was built on the foundation of a historical novelty that to a great degree is still alive in the present: artists and producers of images in general sought to delegitimize the values, conventions and authorized forms passed down by tradition, erasing the limits and margins of action in the space of art. This free and political potential of images was then unfolded over a new urban world, with its author and distribution rights, its world’s fairs and tourists, in the century where money had become the new value. Art yearned for a museum without walls, and now inhabits a factory without walls, a smart city.
This negotiated dialogue between the discredit or criticism of received values and the ubiquity of economic value as the ultimate regulator of culture, comes down to us today as a battle that still needs to be fought, though we do not know how: it is a battle we are lacking sufficient knowledge to fight.
Here then, Value! is a series of 10 debates, each starting with one of ten open scenarios in Barcelona, where the iconic, historical, political and collective values of some of the things that are seen in the city are decided.
