Ana Jotta

Ana Jotta. Abans que me n’oblidi

Working with a broad range of media, formats and aesthetics, Jotta’s pieces establish a heterogeneous space of their own, filled with unlikely encounters, unusual juxtapositions, turmoil and convulsion. The vernacular, everyday life functions as the primary source for all her work as the artist, behaving as a compulsive collector, sanctions, judges, and collects all sorts of objects and images from her surroundings. This rich and unconventional gathering of materials ends up having a direct effect on the artist’s work, with some of these materials ending up being incorporated in, or directly transformed into artworks.

Ana Jotta occupies a very singular place in the Portuguese artistic scene. Since the very beginning, she has been nurturing an impulse towards the subversion of conventional cultural models, as well as a disregard towards the supposed need to imprint her authorial mark on her works, to focus on one media, or even to make her works relevant according to any expectation, be it historical, aesthetic or stylistic.
