ERROR 404, NOT FOUND

The 404 NOT FOUND error appears on the computer screen when trying to connect to a web page that the browser does not detect, a page not found, a badly written address. It's like being in a dead end on a map, an area of uncertainty on our route.

But 404 is also the original name of a neighborhood of Cartagena built in 1945 with the four hundred and four houses that gave name to one of those social promotions post-war Franco. Later it was renamed Barriada Cuatro Santos although popularly it was always called Las Cuatrocientas, like so many other neighborhoods of the Spanish geography that use the cardinal numbers and that in many occasions they are related to the marginality.

Gonzalo Sicre (Cadiz, 1967) and Ángel M.Charris (Cartagena, 1962) are two artists from Galería Trama who have their studio in this neighborhood of Cartagena, and are the protagonists of this four-handed project that we present for the Barcelona Gallery Weekend.

Both artists have previously held exhibitions around territories painted in the past, including: "Cape Cod / Cabo de Palos" (1997), an exhibition inspired by the figure of Edward Hopper and the parallels that both artists see between Cape Code to Massachussetts (land where Hopper spent six months a year to inspire and paint his works) and Cabo de Palos, a place of Cartagena well known by our artists.

This exhibition was intended to explore both places (and thus made a trip to America to see the works and landscapes of Hopper live) and was presented in several cultural centers in Cartagena and Valencia. Subsequently, moved by the same idea of the trip, both artists jointly present "Insomnio" (2011) which was exhibited in the cultural center La Conservera, and which involved the review of the work of the Belgian artist Leon Spilliaert and the North Sea of Ostende, in Flanders, land where the artist lived and worked.

In this second exhibition, the artists explore the idea of the trip again and have Spilliaert as a backdrop. According to the account, the author spent many sleepless nights wandering the streets of his hometown, and this is the point that interests our artists: the moment of insomnia, where reality is less precise, the boundaries between lucidity and dream are blurred and give way to the imagination to make visible through the painting a rich and complex interior world that was evident in this sample.

So this new joint project that we present for the Barcelona Gallery Weekend this time touches the artists' own territory, but the same spirit of travel and discovery is maintained, this time before the everyday, the near and even the seemingly insignificant. We will discover through their paintings a place that is the periphery of the periphery, a place classified as "not findable" a place from which many may consider a mistake to pose something within contemporary art, but as full of mystery and enigma as any other.

His immediate referent could be "Paterson" (2016) a film by independent American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, star of the last edition of the Cannes festival. This film is a compliment to everything that hides the everyday and we often lose by rushing, worry or being disconnected from the here and now, elements that seek to connect our artists.

Another reference is also found in the "Paseo", a book by the writer Robert Walser and in filmmakers such as Aki Kaurismäki or the Japanese Yasujiro Ozu or Kore Eda, who reflect on the life that happens, the routine, the humble poetics of the repetition and the customs of those neighborhoods with which we cross each day.

Thus, articulated around fragments, cuts, sketches, notes, material objects and pictures "Error 404 NOT FOUND" has the spirit of boxes of memories accumulated in storerooms, unimportant objects that our memory illuminates with a special shine.

It is also the result of walks of the artists by the neighborhood, trying to follow the norms that the mentioned writer Robert Walser associates to a good walk as it narrates the following quote:
"His careful gaze must wander and slide everywhere, disinterested and unselfish, he must always be able to dissolve in the observation and perception of things, and he must put off, despise himself and forget himself, his complaints, his needs , shortcomings, privations ... "
